What is the difference between single and progressive lenses?

You may have heard of them before, single vision and progressive glasses. But what exactly is the difference?
In this article, we would like to explain to you the difference between these lens types.

Single glasses

Single vision glasses are glasses for better near or far vision. Single vision glasses for near vision have a plus prescription in the lenses. This allows you to see sharply up close, for example, to read a book. Single vision glasses for distant vision have a minus prescription in the lenses. This allows you to see sharply in the distance, for example while driving a car.

Thus, the lens of single vision lenses has only one prescription (either minus or plus).

Single vision and multifocal

Multifocal lenses

Multifocal glasses allow you to see well both far and near. Multifocal lenses combine different prescriptions in one lens. Depending on where you look in your lens, this allows you to see well at different distances: at reading distance, intermediate distance and far away. Without having to change glasses. Thus, with multiple lenses (also called multifocal lenses or varifocal lenses) you can see sharply both near and far.

Age

After the age of forty, there is a good chance that you will have to deal with two prescriptions in one eye. If you need a correction for near and far, progressive glasses can be the solution.
