You can compare blue light to ultraviolet light (Uv light). Uv light and blue light are part of natural daylight. Daylight is good for you. It is not for nothing that we are encouraged to go outside. Daylight recharges you, so to speak. Your body gets to work and produces serotonin. This little substance is also known as the happiness hormone. Your body also makes cortisol, which is also known as the stress hormone. Both of these substances make you feel awake and active.

What devices give off blue light?

More and more sources of blue light have entered our lives through the use of LED screens, which are rich in blue light. Think of devices such as smartphones, tablets, computer monitors, laptops and televisions.

The monitor on which you read this text emits blue light. This light is also found in daylight and in the light from LED lamps. Blue light is not harmful, but it can make looking at a computer screen less comfortable. We explain why. And what you can do to improve your comfort.

The disadvantages of screen work

Looking at screens frequently can feel uncomfortable in the long run. You stare at the screen for long periods at a time, focusing on (small) print or other details and not blinking your eyes enough. Blue light increases the risk of depression and can also bring physical complaints such as dry, tired or burning eyes; pain in the neck, shoulders or back; headaches and difficulty concentrating. It also increases the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart problems.

What can be done about it?

Research by the RIVM (in cooperation with the Amsterdam Medical Center) among more than 1,300 children and adolescents shows that filtering blue light with Bluefilter glasses has a positive effect on the natural production of melatonin and on sleep quality. Bluefilter glasses provide slightly more orange glow over your screen, making colors softer and warmer. Bluefilter is a coating on your lenses that normalizes the blue light from your screen. It does not matter whether you are farsighted, nearsighted or have no vision problems at all. You can opt for prescription or prescription-free Bluefilter lenses. The glass with Bluefilter neutralizes the blue light and gives peace to your eyes. Thus, you protect your eyes from the adverse effects of your monitor, making it easier to work relaxed behind your computer or other monitor. And that's nice!

It is important to take good care of your eyes. Here are some tips.

  • Take breaks from your screen.
Looking at a computer or smartphone all day causes dry eyes. When you look at a digital screen you blink your eyes less. That's why it's important to take regular breaks where you don't look at a screen.
  • Keep your distance from your screen.
Depending on the size of your screen, an average distance of 60 - 100 cm is recommended.
  • Follow the 20-20-2 rule.
To prevent eye problems, eye doctors recommend the 20-20-2 rule of thumb. The 20-20-2 rule means: after 20 minutes of looking at a phone or tablet, take a 20-second break where you look into the distance. The 2 represents 2 hours a day outside.
