What is an RI&E?

Back to knowledge base

As an employer, you are responsible for the safety and health of your employees. This is described in the Working Conditions Act (Arbowet).

With an RI&E (Risk Inventory and Evaluation) you identify all occupational risks within your company or organization. Risks that are visible, but also invisible risks. The goal is not only to recognize potential risks, but also to evaluate them and draw up a plan to control them. With an RI&E, you create a work environment in which the health and safety of your employees is paramount.

RI&E stands for Risk Inventory and Evaluation.

So with an RI&E you look at what risks there are and make a plan of action. The inventory is mandatory for every employer with at least one employee. If you do not make an RI&E, the Dutch Labour Inspectorate can fine you. Insurers can also offer less or no coverage if you do not have an RI&E or have not complied with it.

Within a company, not all risks are readily apparent. While some risks such as working with hazardous materials or lifting heavy objects are obvious, there are also subtle risks such as workload, stress and possible discrimination that are not immediately observable. To protect your employees from the risks, map them all. After identifying the risks, you can begin to reduce or eliminate them. Will a new risk arise? For example, because you are working with new products or in a new place? Then adjust your RI&E again. This creates the opportunity to take specific measures to reduce these risks. In this way you ensure a healthy and safe workplace for all your employees with the goal of minimizing health complaints, absenteeism and accidents.

A healthy and safe workplace increases job satisfaction and productivity.

An employer can conduct an RI&E themselves or have it done by an occupational health and safety expert. Employers can use certain tools - such as the route planner on rie.nl - to see what aids are needed. Tools include prescription safety glasses or prescription monitor glasses.

What are the benefits of an RI&E?

  • Satisfaction
Your employees are satisfied and more motivated
  • Higher productivity
Because your employees feel better, productivity is higher
  • Lower turnover
Employees who are satisfied are less likely to look for another job
  • Less absenteeism
Employees who work in a safe and healthy work environment are less likely to get sick, reducing (long-term) absenteeism
  • Preventing fines and compensation claims
When your RI&E is in order you prevent fines from inspection and compensation claims from your employees
