According to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, employers must ensure that working conditions are safe

Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, employers are obliged to ensure that working conditions are safe and healthy for their employees. To fulfill this obligation, employers must take preventive measures aimed at ensuring a safe working environment. If necessary, they must also provide personal protective equipment to minimize the risks of injury or health problems.

A specific example of personal protective equipment that employers should pay attention to is eye protection, such as monitor glasses. In situations where employees regularly use screens, such as computers, laptops or other digital devices, it is important that employers take precautions to prevent eye-related health problems.

Screen work can damage your eyes

Screen work sounds very harmless, but it is very intense for your eyes. As a result, 80% of people who work more than two hours daily behind a screen suffer from

  • tired eyes
  • burning eyes
  • dry eyes
  • blurred vision
  • backache
  • neck pain
  • headache

Prevent and reduce complaints

For an employee who does not yet have complaints, prescription monitor glasses have a preventive effect. And for employees who already have complaints, the discomfort decreases.

Obligation of employers

What does the Occupational Health and Safety Act say about the obligation of employers?

The Occupational Health and Safety Act states exactly what is mandatory for employers (Article 5.11):

Measures related to the protection of workers' eyes and eyesight

  1. Every employee who is assigned to work on a monitor screen for the first time shall, in addition to Article 18 of the law, be given the opportunity to undergo an appropriate eye and eyesight examination before the start of such work and at regular intervals thereafter.
  2. The employee shall be given a further opportunity to undergo an examination as referred to in the first paragraph if he suffers from visual disorders that may be the result of working in front of a monitor.
  3. If the results of the examination referred to in paragraphs 1 and 2 so require, the employee concerned shall be given the opportunity to undergo an ophthalmological examination.
  4. If the results of the examination referred to in paragraphs one to three require it and normal corrective eye devices cannot be used, special corrective eye devices related to the work in question shall be provided to the employee concerned.

Screen glasses must be reimbursed by the employer according to the Occupational Health and Safety Act in the following cases:

  • To employees who need reading glasses and do computer work.
  • To employees who need monitor glasses and spend an average of more than two hours a day in front of a computer. Thus, the Occupational Health and Safety Act says about screen glasses that their purchase cost must be reimbursed by the employer.

What occupations pose specific risks to eye health?

Among other occupations that involve prolonged use of computers. This includes various tasks performed behind a screen, such as administrative work, graphic design, marketing, communications, customer service, word processing and IT.
